Where to stay and how to travel in Georgia. Reviews

Georgia is famous of its hospitality and openness, but if you are travelling there on your own without knowing anyone in the country, recommendations of services from strangers may not necessary be what you expect. And even if you know someone who is Georgian, the people they recommend may not be worth spending time with them. In our case it was the father of our Georgian neighbor from Munich, who made few days of our stay in this beautiful country a hell on earth. And it was not just about lack of hospitality, coz with this we would have been ok, but he turned out to be simply a rude person bossing us around, making rude comments, and putting us in danger when he for example drove backwards on the busy highway. So, whom to trust in Georgia? Well, we met two great drivers on the way and we stayed in two great hostels we definitely recommend. Those people turned out to be not only good at what they are offering but as well extremely nice, helpful, and decent. So here are our recommendations for Georgia:

Tbilisi

In Tbilisi we recommend you a driver Zaza. We met him on the street in the Old Town in Tbilisi and drove with him through the Military Road. He has a big and very comfortable car, great to travel with kids, too. Zaza is super flexible and you can arrange your trips and stops with him as you wish. He is always on time and if he can’t offer something, he definitely knows someone who can. He had as well very good prices.

Borjomi

Another great taxi driver. We went with him for the whole day trip from Borjomi to Vardzia cave monastery. On the way he took us also to Green Monastery, Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, and Sapara Monastery. He helped us as well at Borjomi bus station to find out about marshrutkas to the Black Sea, and believe you me, my fluent Russian would not manage it this time.

Mestia

We loved the place and the owners. This hostel has an amazing atmosphere. That is the place to stay for longer time and simply enjoy Svanetia. Great location, nice hosts, heating in the rooms (very important!), and poetic atmosphere.

Kutaisi

I can write that this place and owners are great but there is much more to this. They saved us when my dear husband found out what happens when you mix cha cha with wine 😉 In the middle of the night they helped me to take care of Dario, make sure that sleeping Zofia doesn’t wake up to see her parents’ misery, and even sent their son to get mineral water for us (yes, middle of the night). In the morning they offered us a stomach saving breakfast. Our love stays for eternity with those amazing people. Plus the place has great food, location, rooms and the view. If you are in Kutaisi you have to stay here.
